Visa Conditions and Required Documents
NB! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, border enforcement measures have been imposed. Please see the links above for current visa conditions and requirements. Foreign nationals, except for those for tourism purpose, are allowed for new entry into Japan under the responsibilities of receiving organizations from March 1 2022. Foreign nationals, who enter Japan for tourism purpose, are allowed for new entry into Japan under the responsibilities of receiving organizations from June 10 2022 (only countries that belong to the blue category). New entry of foreign nationals from all countries and regions is in principle suspended except for those with “special exceptional circumstances”. Meanwhile, foreign nationals who apply for new entry into Japan based on either of the following category (i) to (ⅲ) below are regarded as those with “special exceptional circumstances” and are allowed for new entry into Japan in principle, if the receiving organizations located in Japan completes prescribed application in the Entrants, Returnees Follow-up System (ERFS). (i) Foreign nationals newly entering Japan for a short-term stay (less than three months) for purposes including business and employment (ii) New entry for a short-term stay for sightseeing to visit Japan after June 10, 2022 (only when a travel agency, etc. is in charge of acceptance) (ⅲ) Foreign nationals newly entering Japan for a long-term stay Every Foreign passport holders need a visa to enter Japan due to Covid-19. In case the purpose of travel as above, documents to be submitted with visa applications: ・Passport ・35 mm x 45 mm passport-type photos taken within the previous six months ・Official visa application form (available at the Embassy and on the website) ・The copy of ERFS Some document in addition to the above may be requested for identification purpose. Reviewed border measures from June 2022 Based on the New Border Measures (28) released on May 20 2022, the measures for cross-border travelers from certain countries/regions, such as exemption of on-arrival COVID-19 tests are changed from June 1 2022. Review on the requirements of on-arrival COVID-19 tests and home quarantine period after entry into Japan Based on scientific knowledge on the Omicron variant, infection situations in other countries/regions, risk assessments on inflow of the variant into Japan, efficacy of vaccines etc, taking into full account of risks of inflow of the variant from other countries/regions, following measures will be implemented in accordance with separate designations under this Measures.
